Nobody particularly likes having dark circles around their eyes. If you run a finger over the skin, you’ll feel that it is a lot softer and more fragile than the rest of your face. Because of this, it is also more at risk of being damaged than the rest of your skin. Have you ever seen a black eye? The bruising around the eye becomes so much more pronounced because the skin in that area has a very fine texture – so much so, that it shows damage way more visibly.
The skin around the eyes also has no oil glands, so it’s all on you to keep it safe from external damage. When it comes to dark circles, they can appear in a variety of ways. Some people develop them as a result of hereditary traits, where dark circles are common in previous generations. They can also be caused by lack of sleep, stress, sickness, and a deficiency of important vitamins.
They can often be prevented by incorporating a balanced, nutritious diet into your lifestyle – making sure that you get the valuable vitamins and minerals to keep your skin healthy.
But even then, that may not be quite enough. While people are often so desperate to get rid of them that they pull what they can off of shelves in a department store, it might not be the best option. A number of these creams contain toxic ingredients that have been linked to cancer development and other illnesses.
You may get rid of the circles, but your body will pay for it.
Rather than going with the over-the-counter solutions, stick to homemade remedies for your dark circles. You can cure your skin damage and stay healthy at the same time with any of these options:
1. Cucumber Juice
You’ve probably seen cucumbers laid over the eyes in a number of face masks – that’s because they’re great for treating the fragile areas of skin around your eyes. By using juice instead of actual slices, your skin absorbs all of the nutrients way more quickly than they otherwise would.
Tip: Softly dab it around your eyes twice a day, washing it off with plain water after about 15 minutes of rest time. You can also mix it with 2-3 drops of lemon oil for an even greater effect.
2. Tomato Juice
Tomatoes are packed with vitamins – the same ones that are needed to lighten your skin and improve issues with color. Rather than dabbing this one around your eyes, you can just drink it and let the nutrients do their work.
3. Mixing Potato & Cucumber Juice
This one is more beneficial if your dark circles come along with puffiness – as may be the case with light bruising. Follow the exact same steps as Method #1. The potato juice will help reduce the swelling on the skin without you having to do any extra work.
4. Soaking cotton wool pads in cucumber juice can be strapped over your eyes as you lay down. Keeping them on for about 15 minutes before bed is an easy way to improve your skin health around the eyes.
Remember that when using cucumbers and potatoes for skin care, you still want to opt for organic options. Although you may not be directly eating it, you’ll still have to deal with potential chemical contamination if you go with the non-organic route.
